Dell XPS M1730

May 23, 2008

Features and Design

With very few exceptions this M1730 has the nothing but the highest-end parts available, which is why it costs so much. But keep in mind that there are several other configurations available, and even those are customizable depending on your needs.

The CPU

The M1730 sports the latest and greatest Intel mobile processor, which is the Penryn flavor Core 2 Extreme. It succeeds the Merom chips and features a die shrink to 45nm as well as an additional 2MB of L2 cache, bringing the total to 6MB. Since its an Extreme processor, Intel has left the multiplier unlocked for easy overclocking. Dell provides the option to crank the CPU up in 200MHz increments from 2.8GHz to 3.4GHz.

Graphics

No gaming notebook would be labeled as such without a powerful graphics system, or two of them. Naturally, the M1730 has two NVIDIA 8800M GTX cards, which are the most powerful portable GPUs available at this time. Each GPU has 96 stream processors and 512MB of memory. Both cards run in SLI, of course. The M1730 also includes an Ageia PhysX physics processor.

Nifty Lights

Dell calls its XPS lighting scheme LightFX, and its hard to miss on the...

May 22, 2008

Yeah, I know. This is old news…

Phew, I just love technology. Sooner or later there will be 1GB SSDs around. That is really gonna boost the startup times of gadgets and even my slow “Windows VISTA” laptop.

Transcend has announced its 32GB 2.5-inch SATA Solid State Disk (SSD). This drive has a tough metal outer case, instant access speeds, large capacity, high reliability, low power consumption and anti-shock features.

This drive comes in a standard 2.5” size and has a SATA interface meaning that it can be used in most notebook computers and PCs like a regular hard drive.

The best part is that the Transcend 2.5-inch SATA SSD series are made of solid-state memory with no moving parts. Hence, they will not be susceptible to mechanical failure resulting from vibration, shock, heat.

ASUS Wooden casing laptops

May 22, 2008

You’ll be surprised what ASUS offers you. ASUS had released an extraordinary concept which focuses on the substitute of the casing’s material. As you can see with laptop these days, the casings all made from aluminum, titanium or plastic. But this baby here is made from wood. No no, it’s not artificial melamine wood, its natural wood.

Other than it appeals to the crowd, a bamboo back should look more environmental friendly considering the material is renewable and it won’t cost any damages to the environment. This wooden design can be implement on certain laptops only, such as the U6 and S6 series. The designs also apply for ASUS LS201 4:3 LCD and Essentio 110 mini PC. It’s not commercialized yet and there are just concepts that ASUS had come out with. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that it’s coming out soon. Well, carrying a laptop made out of wood looks cool though.

Samsung X1 the Ultraportable Laptop

May 22, 2008

I’m not sure who’s sexier, the model or the new Samsung X1 Ultraportable Laptop. You be the judge. I’d missed this news earlier and decided to post it now since I’m looking at changing my ASUS laptop once my budget is approved by my in-house CFO. (wife)

A sub 4 pound laptop with a 14 inch wide screen, built in optical drive on the front and a dedicated 128mb video card - this dream ultraportable is unheard of - until now. The Samsung X1 is one of Samsung’s latest laptop offerings, and it certainly is one of a kind. It weighs just 3.75 pounds, is 19.2-23mm thick/thin, with a 14″ WSXGA screen, a 128Mb ATI X300 graphics card, runs on a 1.1Ghz Pentium M733, has 512Mb of DDR2 RAM and a 60Gb and 5400rpm hard drive.

Lenovo IdeaPad U110 Ultraportable

May 22, 2008

The upcoming Lenovo IdeaPad U110 Ultraportable is a 11 inch wonder that will fit in any purse or bag for that matter. Not that I fancy small display notebooks since I’m still so in love with my Dell 1520 notebook. The Lenovo IdeaPad U110 Ultraportable is the smaller amongst its bigger versions - the 17-inch Y710, and the 15.4-inch Y510.

I’ve found out that IdeaPads have textured lid finishes (unglossiness ?), sleek “frameless” screens, media contro keys on the top side of the keyboard and a bright orange button, called the Shuttle Key, which can be used on its own to control volume or other functions (sort of a Fn key). Also included will be a Shuttle Center media software, Dolby Home Theater sound, built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam, face off biometric security and quick system recovery in case viruses strike.

May 22, 2008

I’ve always wanted to buy slim laptops. Sure the Sony and Toshiba notebooks that came out before the cool Apple Macbook Air was a bit hard on the pocket but its eye catching when you bring them out at your local Starbucks. Now the lighty Macbook Air has a rival in the new Lenovo ThinkPad X300.

Businessweek has a good behind-the-scenes look at Lenovo’s 20 month journey to build the perfect slim laptop that comes out after the Macbook Air 9 Feb shipping date.

The price range for this piece of art is about $2,700 to $3,000, and it will be featured at the upcoming Beijing Olympics 2008, where Lenovo is to be one of the major sponsors. The official launch for this hotness is slated for February 26th.

Asus Eee PC 901 dropping soon

May 22, 2008

Looks like a new sibling to the existing Asus Eee PC 900 is coming soon. The Asus Eee PC 901 may have the same specs as the 900 and the difference is only a new row of buttons between the keyboard and battery, along with a power plug on the left side.

Nothing much is different from the 900, but apparently Asus has thrown in a new row of buttons between the keyboard and battery, along with a power plug on the left side.Guess the measurements were not tampered with this time. I wonder if the innards will be different.
